In 1962 Carolyn became a Professor at Azusa Pacific University and challenged her college students to cross the border into Mexico to do mission work.

In 1970 Carolyn Founded the Institute for Outreach Ministries (IOM) at Azusa Pacific University, and the Mexico Outreach program with the vision statement of “Crossing borders in partnership to communicate Christ’s love,” began to explode in growth as they coordinated several specialty trips each year. As the youth and missions passion grew close to 10,000 students and adults annually from churches throughout the US and Canada participated in one of Mexico Outreaches High School mission trips, College Mission Trips, Family Camp’s, Jr. High mission trips, and even Single Adult Mission trips.

1998

building

1998.  Carolyn had a vision to expand the week-long short term missions trips and establishing a year round in-country ministry center where 52 weeks a year, groups from America, Canada, Mexico and beyond can stay as they answer God’s call to go serve His people in Mexico. “Azusa Pacific International” a Mexican non-profit” entity, purchased the 17-acre Rancho El Refugio, “The Refuge,” in the beautiful rolling hills of Ensenada’s idyllic countryside, 65 miles south of Tijuana.

Today

After 50 amazing and ministry growing years at Azusa Pacific University Carolyn now focuses her ministry full time in Mexico as Executive Director of Rancho El Refugio and President of the “Life Bridge Mexico,” the Mexican non-profit entity that oversees Rancho El Refugio.

Today Rancho El Refugio has lived up to its name, each year providing a refuge for thousands of people who cross the border to do mission work in Mexico. It also serves as a place of fellowship for Mexican Kids’ Camp, national pastors’ conferences, spiritual retreats, and many other activities.

The Ranch houses Puente de Vida, a school for Oaxacan Indians and extremely disadvantaged children, Prison and Rehab Ministries, House Building and construction ministries, Feeding Ministries, along with expanding the Conferences and Retreats for nationals and a center where both US, Canadian’s, and national churches can minister together. The near future Rancho El Refugio ministry will be moving into Micro Enterprise ventures and Micro-Loans for nationals.
